REGIONAL FORECAST: HOUSEHOLD GROWTH REVISED DOWNWARD; POPULATION GROWTH EXPECTED TO SLOW

Published by the Metropolitan Council in November 2019

“The Twin Cities region will gain 803,000 residents between 2010 and 2040, bringing the region’s population to 3,653,000, according to updated regional forecasts published by the Metropolitan Council in November. The estimated 2018 population of the seven-county metro area is 3,113,000.

Over the same years, the metro area will add 472,000 jobs, reaching more than two million jobs by 2040. Half of those jobs have already been added during 2010-2019, meaning job growth is expected to slow in the next two decades as the regional and national economies struggle with long-term workforce shortages and the replacement of baby boom generation workers.”

Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute

What is the BCLI?

“Nexus Community Partners (Nexus) Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI) is a 7-month leadership program that supports, trains and helps place people of color and other underrepresented community members on city and county publicly appointed boards and commissions* that influence and impact equity in the Twin Cities Metro Area in economic development, health, housing, transit and workforce development.

This program has been adapted from the Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute originally created by Urban Habitat in Oakland, California.

Why the BCLI?

Boards and commissions are often key decision-making bodies on important equity issues. The BCLI supports people of color and underrepresented communities to be a part of that process from the inside, advocating for their communities and a broader equity agenda at the systems level. We believe this will build more engaged and powerful communities in our region.

Who Participates in the BCLI?

Community members who are representative of, and accountable to, communities of color and other underrepresented communities in the Twin Cities.”

$4 Million in DEED Redevelopment Grant and Demolition Loan Funds available for February 2020 Grant Round

Please join the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) for an informational webinar on December 5, 2019 to learn more about the Redevelopment Grant and Demolition Loan Programs. DEED will have $4 million of Redevelopment Grant funding available for the February 2020 grant round.

The webinar will provide valuable information about the Redevelopment Grant Program and Demolition Loan Program, including eligible applicants and activities, and projects that will compete well for grant or loan funds.

Redevelopment Grant funds assist with the cost of demolition and abatement; as well as other project-related improvements, such as soil stabilization and site preparation related infrastructure that is necessary for redeveloping blighted property.

Demolition Loan funds help public entities demolish and abate blighted structures in order to eliminate a public safety threat and prepare the site for potential future development.

An overview of the programs is available at Redevelopment Grant Program, and Demolition Loan Program along with applications, forms and instructions.

The deadline for applying for the next round of funding is 4 p.m. on Monday, February 3, 2020.
