In Celebration of Black History Month The East Side Freedom Library Invites You To The Third Film In Our Black History Month Series

Brother John

This 1970 feature is one of Sidney Poitier’s least known films, but it is beginning to receive reconsideration by scholars and critics. Poitier plays an enigmatic man who has returned to his Alabama hometown for his sister’s funeral. A bitter factory worker’s strike has engulfed the town, and the authorities suspect that he is an outside agitator. We learn however, that his role is even more complex and potentially transformative.

Join us not only to watch this unusual film but also to engage in conversation with Dr. John S. Wright, Distinguished Teaching Professor of African American & African Studiesand English at the University of Minnesota.
