2003 Home Dayton's Bluff Home Tour
Saturday May 3, 10 AM to 5 PM
Sunday May 4, 1 PM to 5 PM
(Last Update: April 19, 2003)

It’s time for the 2003 Dayton’s Bluff Home Tour.  This year’s tour will be held on Saturday, May 3rd (from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and Sunday, May 4th (from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.).  Run in conjunction with the Minneapolis – St. Paul Home Tour, the Dayton’s Bluff tour is free of charge and open to the public.
The tour this year features the beautiful Queen Anne homes that have become its trademark, in addition to exciting new construction and renovations for non-traditional housing - from condos on East 5th Street to Lowertown Bluffs, a sustainable urban condominium complex.  Also open during the tour is the newly renovated Mounds Theatre - the Arts and Culture Center of Dayton’s Bluff - that will host an art show (both exhibits and sales) by local artists. The theater is located at 1029 Hudson Road and, like the tour, is open free to the public.
We can always use volunteers to help on the days of the Home Tour.  Volunteering consists mostly of greeting people at the door to give out brochures and information about Dayton’s Bluff, and helping the homeowners for a few hours either day.  If you’re interested, please call Jean at 651-772-5514.
For added fun, join the monthly Dayton’s Bluff Take a Hike, starting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday May 3rd at Mounds Boulevard and Earl Street in Indian Mounds Park.  The group will take the regular tour through historic Swede Hollow and then visit some of the home tour stops on the way back to the park.  Take advantage of this great opportunity to learn some history about the area and visit a few homes besides.  For more information on the hike, call Karin at 651-772-2075.
The Home Tour is free and is being sponsored by the Dayton’s Bluff Community Council, Dayton’s Bluff Neighborhood Housing Services, and Upper Swede Hollow Neighborhoods Association.
We would like to give a special thank you to the people who are opening their homes for this event.  We appreciate everyone who has volunteered their time to make this event possible.

634 Arcade Street
Home No. 43 of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Home Tour
Carrie Nelson
Carrie’s home was built in 1887 and was recently restored from the interior to the exterior.  After nine years of toil, Carrie is ready to show off her Queen Anne home.  The asbestos-ridden exterior siding, sprayed ceilings, vinyl wallpaper, and other atrocities are gone.  What you will find are, a freshly painted (five colors) exterior with ornate carvings, original woodwork, hardwood floors, a grand staircase, and several personal touches.  Carrie believes that lighting sets the tone for a room, so throughout the home she has several unusual fixtures that include a magnificent piece on the staircase banister, and a reproduction chandelier with hand-blown art glass in the dining room.  Don’t forget to check out her newest addition: Lindcrusta, Victorian-era wall covering in one room on the first floor.

1172 Bush Avenue
Home No. 44 of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Home Tour
Paul Garding
Paul has been remodeling this 1907 home for more than a decade!  Converted from a duplex, it showcases his carpentry skill with his love of music.  Leaving only one original wall, he cut open the top of the stairway and added the airy balcony, which allows melodies to carry throughout the rooms.  The granite and cherry wood fireplace anchors the décor in the living room and the new kitchen features handmade cherry cabinets, new maple flooring and leaded windows.  Ask about the reclaimed and recycled materials that were used in the remodeling process.

983 East 5th Street
Donald & Dawn Kroohn
The Kroohn’s home was built in 1913.  Currently, the Kroohn’s are remodeling their third floor bedroom, ½ bath, and a playroom for their grandchildren.  They recently redecorated their living room, dining room, kitchen, eating area on the back porch, and their main bedroom.  Also in the works is the garage being made into a garden room or 3-season room along with a custom shed in the back.  They plan to add a carport to the east side of the house.  This beautiful home still retains its original windows, door trims, bath fixtures, and the pantry off of the kitchen.  Don’t miss this spectacular home.

978 East Fifth Street
Dayton’s Bluff Neighborhood Housing Services
Dayton’s Bluff NHS rehabbed this charming 2-level house.  Before Dayton’s Bluff NHS obtained this house, the original owner had made the upper level into two apartments.  Dayton’s Bluff NHS decided to turn this huge house into an amazing one family house with 5 bedrooms and 2 ¾ baths.  Many unique features of 978 East Fifth have been carefully preserved.  978 East Fifth is currently listed for sale.

1277 Fremont Avenue
Carla Riehle
This 1-½   story bungalow was built in 1930.  The second floor was remodeled in 1996, and the basement was finished in 2000.  Carla still has the blueprints of the original construction for the bungalow.  The main floor of the house has most of its original features of woodwork, built-ins, and its original kitchen cabinets.

Seeger Flats
Tom & Jennifer Gilbert
Nearly 100 years have passed since construction was first completed on this Queen Anne at 661East 5th Street.  The home is historically named “Seeger Flats” after John A. Seeger who built the home for his daughters in 1904.  Seeger was a long time businessman and Saint Paul activist who was widely known for his refrigeration company called Seeger Refrigeration (later Whirlpool).  Today, Seeger Flats is experiencing a complete renovation into condominiums.  There are four unique floor plans that boast high ceilings, stained glass windows, refinished hardwoods, marble floors, and modern stainless steel appliances.  Life at Seeger Flats brings yesterday’s history and tradition into the 21st century.  The condominiums will sell at $124,900 beginning May 1st, 2003.

401 Maple Street
Dave Vorwald/Wayde Moen & Eugene Piccolo
Built in 1909, 401 Maple has been extensively remodeled and restored.  The exterior features new paint, new roof, and wood combination windows.  The interior has refinished hardwood floors, period lighting, a remodeled kitchen with new appliances, a pantry with wine chiller, updated bath, new furnace and central air, updated electrical, and updated plumbing.  The original owner of 401 Maple Street was a conductor.  The builder was L. Lygren.  This house has an open front porch, natural woodwork, stained glass, an open staircase, large foyer, oak between foyer/living room and living room/dining room.  The master bedroom has a rooftop porch, walk-in closet, and unfinished walk-in attic.

1029 Hudson Road
Mounds Theatre
Portage for Youth
The Mounds Theatre was built in 1922. It was used for live shows as well as movies at least into the 1930s.  It had a stage and small orchestra pit in addition to a movie screen.  The theatre has gone through many renovations, which has changed the façade over the years.  In 1967 the theatre was closed and turned into a warehouse.  Portage for Youth, a non-profit for young women, was given the theatre in 2001.  When completed, the theatre will be a performing arts center for the Dayton’s Bluff Community.  Amenities include: seating for 250, a fountain and fireplace in a gathering space, a 900 square foot stage, movie capabilities, and much more.  The theatre has been recently redecorated and is close to completion.  The Mounds Theatre Arts Show will be held during the Home Tour, featuring local artists and performers.

Historic Bluff Landings
Dayton’s Bluff Neighborhood Housing Services
207 and 212-214 Bates Avenue are newly constructed row houses with a total of 9 units ranging from 2 bedrooms to 4 bedrooms.  These buildings are very unique in that they are built in the historic district of Dayton’s Bluff, meaning that the building itself has to be built according to historic preservation rules.  207 Bates Avenue was once the site of an abandoned Honda Garage that was demolished in order for the row houses to be built, and 212-214 Bates was a vacant lot that was located across from 207 Bates Avenue.

636 Bates Avenue
Listing agent: Jay Soeffker
636 Bates Avenue is the main floor condo unit in this Historic Winslow Dunn House. Built in 1908, and originally located at 397 Bates Avenue, the up/down duplex was moved to its current location in 2000 and converted into two condominium units. (Notice the stained glass window with number 397 as you walk up the front porch.)
The conversion rehabbed and painstakingly preserved the original character and craftsmanship of the building, while extensively updating its structure. Some incredible architectural details highlighted in this home include French doors, a built-in oak buffet, stained & leaded glass windows, as well as natural woodwork and hardwood floors.
