Joan and Ed Selnes

This beautiful three-bedroom brick Queen Anne residence was built in 1889 for the William Eilers family at the cost of $5,000. Eilers was born in Espelkamp, Germany in 1838. He came to the United Stated in 1853, fought in the Civil War, and married in 1872.

Eilers came to St. Paul in 1855 and had started a business out of his home downtown. When his family moved to their new home in Dayton's Bluff, he again ran his business out of his home. William died in 1910. He had a daughter, Selma, and a son, Frank. In 1918 the house was sold to Hessel Kingman, a post office letter carrier. The Kingman family lived in the house for over 70 years.

The Selnes became the third owners, purchasing this decaying building in 1995. Pocket doors and pine trim where only part of the charm that invited their captivity in turning this house into a home. They have done much of the restoration themselves. Updates include a new roof, furnace, wiring and kitchen plumbing. The kitchen was the challenge because the room had six doorways, two windows, a radiator, two pipe chases and a chimney. They creatively installed custom cabinets in a modified dual-peninsula arrangement.
